How to Network at UNGA 2025: A Practical Guide for First-Timers
UNGA 2025 dates, theme and who will be in town
The 80th session opens on 9 September 2025. High-Level Week runs from 23 to 29 September, with the General Debate beginning on 23 September. The General Assembly’s High-Level Week effectively serves as an annual global town hall—a space where all 193 member states engage equally under the “one country, one vote” principle, and present their perspectives and positions.
This year’s banner theme is widely flagged as Better together, with an emphasis on recommitting to peace, development and human rights. Expect a dense line-up of heads of state, ministers, CEOs, foundations and media.
This year comes amid heightened geopolitical tension and global concern. Leaders face mounting crises: spiralling conflicts, debt stress in developing economies, climate urgency, and AI governance challenges.
High-profile moments include France’s plan to recognise Palestine during UNGA and PM Modi’s likely appearance, scheduled for 26 September, adding diplomatic interest.
Annalena Baerbock of Germany has been elected President of the General Assembly; she brings a fresh European perspective.
2025 marks the 10th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Expect intensified side events across health, climate, youth and gender themes.
The UN80 Initiative, launched in March 2025, promises reform—enhancing efficiency and renewing multilateral commitment, especially as UN offices shift focus toward lower-cost, strategic field locations.
Access and Accreditation
Do not assume you can walk in. Access to UN Headquarters requires a grounds pass or special pass, and security tightens during High-Level Week. NGO access points are restricted and the 46th-Street entrance is often the only door open when security is elevated.
- NGOs must request passes via ECOSOC.
- Media apply through MALU.
- Private delegates attending side events need to confirm venue-specific registration and bring official ID.
Major UN-Anchored Campaigns
- Global Goals Week: Coordinated by the UN Foundation and partners, this brings together hundreds of SDG-focused events across the city.
- Climate Week NYC: Running 21–28 September 2025, this is the world’s largest annual climate gathering, with more than 900 events led by businesses, governments, think tanks, artists and civil society.
You can also use the UNGA Guide to search by keyword, date and sector to find relevant events. Beyond these, fringe convenings provide prime networking opportunities.

Transport and hotels during High-Level Week
Traffic in Midtown slows to walking pace during UNGA. The city issues Gridlock Alert Days and average speeds fall below four mph. Build your diary around walking routes or use the subway between 42nd and 59th Streets.
If you must use a car, add a 30-minute buffer per trip. For accommodation, book months in advance. Popular choices among delegations include the InterContinental New York Barclay and Lotte New York Palace.
How to Network at UNGA
- Go in with an agenda. Pick three themes you will champion and five people/organisations you should aim to meet. If you don’t have a clear goal, the week will overwhelm you.
- Rehearse your pitch. You will often get 60 seconds in a coffee queue or corridor. Be able to say: who you are, what you want, and what you can offer. Don’t oversell—create intrigue. Frame your opening as curiosity-driven.
- Target the power behind the power. Ministers and heads of state are rarely available, but their chiefs of staff and advisers drive the agenda. Same for CEOs and their EAs and C-suite colleagues. Include them in your target list.
- Use the rhythm of the week. Breakfasts are easier to diarise with busy prospects as you are not competing with other priorities during the day.
- Work the hotel lobbies. Key hotel lobbies near the venues are ripe for unscripted encounters and walk-and-talk meetings.
- Follow up fast. Send a crisp note within 48 hours. Reference the panel or comment you shared, and propose a few time slots for a call the week after.
- Search social first. Scan social media for attendees and, if appropriate, ask for coffee. You may end up as a plus-one to a closed-door event.
Field checklist for UNGA first-timers
- Dress formally but practically. September weather is unpredictable—pack a light jacket or umbrella, sturdy shoes, and an AC-friendly layer.
- Track the traffic. Check gridlock alerts before 8am. After that, the city belongs to motorcades—walk whenever possible.
- Meal stacking. Double up on early/late breakfasts, lunches, and dinners—breaking bread remains one of the most effective ways to build relational capital.
- Plan your bilaterals. Book a quiet spot near key venues for short meetings.
- Carry physical business cards. Connectivity can lag; also use LinkedIn QR codes and WhatsApp, and take screenshots so contacts don’t vanish into the digital vortex.
- Stay sustainable. A refillable water bottle reduces plastic and keeps you moving.
- Stay powered. Keep your phone fully charged and carry a reliable portable charger.
- Be informed. News moves fast at UNGA—schedule multiple check-ins with your news source so you can hold informed conversations.
For first-timers, UNGA can be overwhelming. But with focus, preparation and strategic networking, it is an unrivaled networking platform. If you prepare well and stay open to chance encounters, UNGA can become the most valuable week of your professional year.
