On the evening of Monday 24 February, Gallery Elena Shchukina opened the doors to their new, second space on Beauchamp Place, Knightsbridge with the first UK solo exhibition by Monaco-based Brazilian artist Marcos Marin.
The evening itself provided the perfect atmosphere for Marin’s works to shine and a variety of guests attended – ranging from the Parisian singer Gregory Bakian, members from the Brazilian Embassy and notable art collectors, artists and key figures in the London art scene.
Marcos Marin: Icons encompasses new and recent works by the artist. The pieces range through paintings, sculptures and screen prints and each individual work displays an attentive artistry that draws the eye. The artist explores celebrity in a stark and often disarming way. Marin’s large scale op-art imagery takes a viewer into a close examination of celebrity, beauty and contemporary society.
Marin’s use of light and shadow invests his sculptures with a depth that must be seen to comprehend. The sculptures cast their striped shadows on the walls behind and in doing so they seem bigger, imposing upon the viewer. His screen prints are also large-scale, his take on London’s Big Ben being especially distinct. The red lines and repetitious imagery of one of London’s most iconic landmarks demand consideration, Marin forces us to look closer.
The original Gallery Elena Shchukina in Mayfair has, since it’s opening last year, seen some truly incredible art exhibitions. The new second space has followed suite with the Marcos Marin: Icons exhibition. A range of Marin’s new and recent works are displayed, continuing Marin’s Warholian fascination with celebrity culture and Pop art.
Marcos Marin: Icons will be showing at Gallery Elena Shchukina’s second space on 18 Beauchamp Place from 24 February – 28 March.
